Tasting Notes

Deep golden orange, a fair bit cloudy. Citrus peel and spice blend with baser notes of oatmeal and brown rice. Full and dry, grainy tannin make this the red drinkers white, multi layered, rewards time in the glass. This wine bridges the gap between something like an oaky chardonnay and the more confronting skin contact whites out there.

The Wine Front, Mike Bennie - 92 points : "Field blend of semillon, riesling, pedro ximenez, roussanne and a bit of muscadelle. The parcels saw some fermented on skins, from around nine to 21 days, and a portion sent straight to barrel to be fermented. Layers. A child of Rootstock Sydney, says wine grower Wayne Ahrens, I didnt really know what orange wines were, but met a few producers at the festival, talked to them, went home and had a crack at the style. Boing! Straight out of the glass an electric jab of citrus and green apple and gingery spice. Hit of sweet-sour to taste, some herbs and spice, hit of lemongrass and gingery spice in palate, finishes with chalky tannins and wash of juicy acidity. Wild style but feels brilliant and exciting to drink."
About the Winery

Smallfry wines is a partnership in business and life between Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens. We are viticulturists bitten by the winemaking bug, the chance to turn our own fruit into wine is too good to pass up. That we are also foodies drives our winemaking down a certain path. Natural ferments, nil to minimal adjustment, old oak a soft hand in the cellar allows the vineyard to speak. The style is food friendly, Euro style, with a eye to balance and subtlety.
