About the Winery
Scarbolo is a boutique family winery established in 1982, today helmed by its third generation. Finding its home in Friuli – Italy’s northeastern-most region, embraced by the Alps and the Adriatic Sea – the winery works to faithfully portray the unique quality of the local white wines, focusing on the little-known heritage of Pinot Grigio.
Originating from Grave, one of the less-celebrated appellations, the philosophy and wines of Valter Scarbolo embody a spirit of innovation, progress and at times rebellion, while proudly expressing the elegance, persistence and, most importantly, balance so unique to the Friulian terroir. Located in the village of Lauzacco, a stone’s throw from the western bank of the river Torre and the Slovenian border, low-yielding and densely planted vines – following the SQNPI sustainability practices - are planted in stratified soils, composed of medium-textured clay, sand, limestone, and gravels in alternating layers. These grounds were generated by ancient erosion processes and the melting of glaciers - the latest dating back to 15,000 years ago - that transported a mix of fine alluvial deposits and sandy gravel down to the plains. Combined with the unique symphony of eastern winds from Slovenia, the balancing effect of the sea breezes, and the Alps fending off the northern harsh climates, the melding of terroir and style reveal themselves in gracefully powerful ambrosial wines.
