Wine Region: Jerez, Spain
Grape: Pedro Ximénez
750ml
Tasting Notes: Quite a bright nose, with lots of raisins and figs but in a fruity way rather than the sticky way. Honey and plenty of quince jelly. Some green, leafy notes too, as well as a light woody touch. Light cinnamon. Very sweet and onctuous, but again not over the top. Toffee notes, desserts with figs and honey. Guava. Grows slightly darker towards the end, with some Turkish coffee, dark caramel and a light spicy edge (pepper, cardamom). Long finish.
About the Winery:
After decades of market domination by insipidly sweet, mediocre wines, the world’s gaze is increasingly being drawn to Sherry’s treasures. This is the tiny proportion of wines still patiently aged in its ancient soleras, with their bracing dryness, thrilling complexity and inspiring antiquity. And no greater treasures are emerging than those of Valdespino, the producer most steeped in history and rooted in tradition.
Valdespino is a prestigious and historic winery located in the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry region of Andalusia, Spain. The winery has a remarkable heritage that dates back to 1264, making it one of the oldest sherry-producing houses in the region.
Valdespino is particularly renowned for its production of Sherry wines, including Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Pedro Ximénez. These wines are produced using the traditional Solera system, a unique aging process that involves blending different vintages to achieve consistency and complexity. The winery owns extensive vineyard holdings in the region, including the renowned “Macharnudo” and “Inocente” vineyards, which are known for producing grapes of exceptional quality.
